Bill D. Smelcer, 76, of Decatur, IL formerly of Granite City, IL passed away at 11:50A.M. Saturday, December 13, 2008 at Fair Havens Christian Home in Decatur, IL.
Bill was born on May 30, 1932 in Southern Missouri. He was a son of Orville Purl and Beatrice Pauline (Wickham) Smelcer. He married Margaret Fae Bradford on March 25, 1957 in Alorton, IL.
He is survived by his wife Margaret “Marge” Smelcer of Decatur, IL; one daughter, Marri Mucho and her husband Greg of Decatur, IL; two granddaughters, Jessica and Michaela Mucho and one brother, Bobby Smelcer of Herrick, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Wayne Smelcer and one sister June Thomas.
Bill attended High School in Bakersfield, CA. While in California he did some rodeo bull riding which lead to a job at Warner Brothers Movie Studio. He worked as a stunt man starring in movies with John Wayne.
He came back to Illinois to visit his brother, Wayne, and met Marge at church. They married and Bill took a job at McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis, MO as an aircraft mechanic. He retired from there in 1993 with over thirty years of service.
Bill had been a deacon of The Rock Church in Granite City, IL. He and Marge moved to Decatur, IL in 1997. He was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God in Decatur, IL where he enjoyed working in the kitchen.
Bill had raised horses; he enjoyed camping, fishing, making fishing lures, woodcarving and woodworking.
