CARROLL D. “STUB” HOHENSTEIN, 73, of Illiopolis, IL passed away at 1:45 p.m. Thursday, August 20th 2009 in Decatur, IL.
A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 23, 2009 in the Illiopolis Elementry School Gymnasium in Illiopolis, IL. The Edwards Funeral home of Arcola, IL is assisting the family with arrangements.
Carroll “Stub” was born on August 16, 1936 in Illiopolis, IL. He was a son of John Sr. and Ruth (Bilbe) Hohenstein. He married Sue Rogers on April 26, 1959. She passed away on April 7, 2007. They shared 47 years of a great life together.
Surviving are his girls, Julie (John) Peters of Decatur, IL, Jana (Tim) Mahannah, of Arcola, IL, Jennifer (Mike) Flesch of Decatur, IL and his son, Jason (Becky) Hohenstein of Mahomet, IL. His grandchildren, Madison Higgins and Molly Mahannah, Sarah Hohenstein, Avante and Naithan Coen Flesch. He is also survived by his brothers, Paul (Elaine) Hohenstein, of Decatur, IL and Glenn (Joan) Hohenstein, of Boulder, CO and his close nephews, Larry (Pat) Tennyson, of Phoenix, AZ and Jack (Fran) Herbert, of Macon, IL.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, John Jr., Eldon, and Delmar Lee Hohenstein. His sisters, Veta Tennyson, Eleanor Elliott, Benita “Sissy” Herbert and Ruth Anne Hohenstein-Jones.
Carroll “Stub” was a graduate of Illiopolis High School and a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of Illiopolis Christian Church and attended First Christian Church in Decatur, IL.
He retired from Borden Chemical in Illiopolis, IL after 44 years of service.
Stub will be remembered for being a stand-out athlete in Basketball and Football at Illiopolis High School. He was a lifetime loyal Boston Red Sox fan, referring back to his boy-hood admiration for Ted Williams. He also loved the Chicago Bears and Fighting Illini. He was a garage tinkerer, fisherman, gardener, and storyteller extraordinaire. He took great pride in his family and loved living in a small Midwest town. His enthusiasm for life, along with his smile and laugh will be missed by so many. He was a good Dad and a cool Grand-pa.
