Dale Page Alexander Sr., 87 of Charleston, IL passed away at 2:04 PM on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
A celebration of Dale’s life will be held from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. on August 24, 2024 at the Charleston Country Club, 8355 Country Club Rd., Charleston, IL. A time for Sharing memories of Dale will be begin at 3:00 P.M. at the Charleston Country Club. A private burial will held in the Green Hill Cemetery in Sullivan, IL. The Edwards Funeral Home in Arcola, IL is assisting the family.
Dale was born on February 2, 1937 in Highland Park, MI. He was the son of Eli and Faira (Page) Alexander. He married Karen Julene Campbell on March 1, 1959 in Murray, KY. She passed away on April 7, 2015. He later married Mary Jane (McGovern) Ward on June 13, 2019 in Charleston, IL.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; two children, Tammy (Alexander) Fleischut and her husband Steve of St. Louis, MO, and Page Alexander and his wife Bethany of Springfield, IL; three step-children, Janeen Parkhill and her husband Brad, Jennifer Voss and her husband Steve, and Jacki Simpson and her husband Brian; seven grandchildren, Brittany Alexander, Derek Alexander and his wife Sonia, Evan Alexander, Bailey Alexander, Bridget Fleischut, Alexander Fleischut and Rachel Fleischut; ten step-grandchildren, Tyler Voss, Chris Parkhill, Chloe Parkhill, Zach Voss, Drew Voss, Emily Voss, Ray Simpson, Jane Simpson, Kate Simpson, and David Simpson; four great grandchildren, Wesley, Ambrielle, Ava and Abi, and another great grandbaby on the way, as well as two brothers, Don Alexander his best friend and confidant, and Dean Alexander, both of Murray, KY.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Julene Alexander, and a step-grandson, Nick Parkhill.
Dale graduated from Murray High School in Murray, KY in 1955. He was a standout athlete in football, basketball and baseball. He was named All-Conference and All-State offensive end 1952-1954 and he was inducted into the Murray High School Football Hall of Fame in 1998. Dale was also inducted in the Murray High School Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.
Dale attended Murray State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in education. While at Murray State he played baseball and basketball from 1956-1961 and was inducted into the Murray State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990. After college, Dale had a walk on contract with the LA Dodger’s and the Chicago White Sox, but he had a beautiful baby girl on the way and decided family was most important.
He and his wife Julene started their married life in Murray, KY and they lived for six years in Hickman, KY where he taught PE and Health, and he served as Athletic Director, Head Baseball Coach, Head Basketball Coach, and Head Football Coach. They moved to Charleston, IL in 1969 and where he taught PE and Drivers ED at Charleston High School. He also coached basketball, baseball and football; he started the golf program in 1973. He worked at Charleston High School for 29 years. Dale Retired in 1997 from teaching and coaching for a total of 36 years.
Dale was an avid golfer and a member of the Charleston Country Club. He truly enjoyed golfing, and always looked forward to golfing with friends every Wednesday and Friday. He played golf the week before he got sick and shot his age, 87.
