Biography

DELORES JEAN (GREEN) HONN, 77 of rural Tuscola, IL passed away at 8:55 A.M. on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Mason Point in Sullivan, IL.

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 22 2013 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Arthur United Methodist Church, 128 East Illinois St, Arthur, IL. A celebration of life service will be held for Delores on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at the Arthur United Methodist Church. Rev. Leroy Allison will officiate. Burial will be in the Arthur Cemetery. The Edwards Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Delores was born on May 24, 1935 one of five children to Albert F. and Esther (Blaase) Green. Delores was also a twin to her brother, Norris “Bud”. Delores started her life in rural Arthur south of Chesterville. She was raised on that farm until her family moved to Atwood when Delores was a junior in high school. Delores was a graduate of Atwood High School, Class of 1953.
While being raised on the farm, Delores was not a stranger to work as she helped with the house chores and even de-tasseled corn and other field work for the family farm.

On October 18, 1953 Delores married William D. “Bill” Honn from Arthur. From this union came two sons Michael and Steven. During her working career Delores worked for many retail stores in Arthur, some of which included, Dr. Ralph Dixon, she worked as a clerk for auctioneer Jerry Martin, she was a clerk for the Arthur Sale Barn and she was the bookkeeper for Nelson’s Pest Control in Arthur. In 1990 Delores and Bill moved to Las Vegas where she was employed by State Farm Insurance and Wal-Mart in the vision and jewelry departments. In 1997 Delores and Bill moved back to Illinois to be close to family. Delores continued with Wal-Mart until her “official” retirement in 2001 when she moved back to the farmstead that her grandfather had bought in 1857.

Delores also served as an election judge for many years and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Arthur, Mattoon Eagles Club and Ladies of the Moose and was a lifelong member of the Arthur United Methodist Church. Delores served on the pastor parish committee at the church for many years and was also a communion steward. You knew you would always find Delores in downtown Arthur on poppy days as she would be selling them in front of the R & I or Yoder’s or wherever they needed her to be. She was devoted to the honor of the men and women of the service. Delores also helped place flags on the graves of veterans at the Arthur Cemetery for many years. Delores was an avid card player and spent many nights with friends, Dorothy and Herb Waters, Dort and Harold Oye, Evelyn and Dan Craig and Pooch and Abe Ozier; shuffling decks of cards all for that beloved nickel prize for winning.

Left to celebrate her life, are her husband of 59 years, William D “Bill” of Arthur, sons, Michael and his wife Serena of Lovington, Steven and his wife Dee of Arthur; grandchildren, Brent of Belleville, Jennifer of Mahomet, Clayton of Arthur, Kristyn of Champaign, Karissa, Kelsey, Kali all of Arthur, great-grandchildren, Emily, Zowie, Joshua of Mahomet, Tucker of Belleville and Owen of Champaign.

Delores was preceded in death by her parents, twin brother, Norris “Bud” Green, brothers, Dale and Larry Green, sister, Betty Melzer and one grandchild, Chad Honn.

Memorials are suggested to the Arthur Fire Department or the Arthur United Methodist Church.
