ELBERT ELLIS “BOPE” KELSEY, 87 of Arcola IL passed away at 11:42 P.M. on Monday December 21, 2009 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, IL.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at the Edwards Funeral Home. Rev. Donald Winch officiated. Burial was in the Tuscola Cemetery. Visitation was one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home.
“Bope” was born on May 10, 1922 in Bone Gap, IL. He was a son of Otis and Jersey (Ganog) Kelsey. He married Annabelle McGuire in 1956 she passed away on November 26, 1988.
He is survived by one son, Gary “Gus” Kelsey and Sharon of Berrien Springs, MI; three granddaughters, Stephanie Steele of St. Joseph, MI, Amber Williamson and her husband Craig of Carbondale, IL and Crystal Vaughan and her husband Travis of Fairfield, IL; seven great-grandchildren, two of which are Kelsey Lee and William Ellis Beaudette.
He was preceded in death by his wife, one son, three brothers, and six sisters.
“Bope” was a Coast Guard Veteran of WWII, having served as a seaman 1st class in the Pacific.
He was a barber for 18 years. He retired from Kraft Foods in Champaign in 1988 with 18 years of service. He worked at the Arcola School for several years and most recently worked for Mark Nacke and the Arcola TWP mowing at the cemetery.
He was a member of the Arcola VFW, the American Legion and the Arcola First Christian Church.
