Frederick Bumpus

FREDERICK E. BUMPUS, 79, of Arcola, IL passed away at 4:40 P.M. on Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at his residence in Arcola, IL after a courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, December 31, 2012 at the Walnut Grove Christian Church, 12930 E CR 1700 N, Arcola, IL. Rev. Shane Beever and Rev. Barney Wells will officiate. Burial will be in the Humboldt Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. on Sunday, December 30, 2012 at the Edwards Funeral Home, 221 E. Main, Arcola, IL.

Fred was born on June 11, 1933 in rural Arcola, IL, one mile south of the Walnut Grove Christian Church in Coles County. He was a son of George Earl and Dora Belle (Wangler) Bumpus. He married Sue Frances Shrader on June 14, 1953 in Humboldt, IL at the Methodist Church by Rev. H.L. Hayes.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Bumpus of Arcola, IL; one daughter Sally Cavanaugh and her husband Mike of Mooresville, IN; daughter-in-law Irene Bumpus of Chicago, IL; four granddaughters, Katie, Kellie and Kristie Cavanaugh and Chelsea Bumpus; one great-granddaughter, Riley Winters; one brother, Robert “Mac” Bumpus and his wife Pansy of Charleston, IL and one sister Frances Hudson of Arcola, IL and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son Steve Bumpus who passed away on April 24, 2010 and his brother-in-law Robert Hudson.

Fred graduated from Mattoon High School in 1951. While in high school he played basketball, football and wrestled. His junior year at Mattoon High School he started at halfback on the varsity football team. Fred was also very active in 4H and FFA having served as Sectional President. In August of 1950 at the age of 17 Fred was diagnosed with Polio. Fred spent the next year and a half under-going extensive treatment at Warm Springs, GA.

He graduated from the University Of Illinois in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science and Ag Economics.

He took a position with Chase Bank of Springfield, IL (formerly the Springfield Marine Bank). He served there for 18 years.

Then he and his family moved to Arcola in 1975 where Fred worked at the First National Bank of Arcola for 27 years. He retired in 2002.

He has taken many additional classes in banking, farm management and appraisals.

While Fred and Sue lived in Springfield, IL, they were very active members of the Southside Christian Church where Fred served as trustee and youth group leader for 7 years and Fred also was the manager of Steve’s little league baseball team.

Fred was a member of Walnut Grove Christian Church where he served as Elder, Treasurer and Trustee for many years.

He was Trustee of Arcola Foundation for 20 years.

He had been in the Arcola Lions Club.

Fred and Sue enjoyed traveling and spending time with their granddaughters.
