Biography

GENE E. BROWNING, 64, of Cooks Mills, IL passed away at 11:40 P.M. Monday, March 22, 2010 at the Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.

Visitation was from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at the Mt. Zion General Baptist Church, West and South of Cooks Mills, IL. A memorial service was held at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at the Mt. Zion General Baptist Church. Rev. James Maroon officiated. Burial of Gene’s ashes are in the Mt. Zion General Baptist Church Cemetery. The Edwards Funeral Home in Arcola, IL assisted with arrangements.

Gene was born on September 17, 1945 in Cairo, IL. He was a son of James Harvey and Elsie Louise (King) Browning. He married Penny Maranda (Adams) on July 24, 1966 at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Cooks Mills, IL.

He is survived by his wife Penny Browning of Cooks Mills, IL and two children; one daughter, Maranda Jane Poulter of Cooks Mills, IL; one son, Phillip T. Browning of Cooks Mills; one granddaughter, Grayce Emily Poulter of Cooks Mills; one brother Jim Long and his wife Nancy of Skyline Springs; one niece, Candi Mette and her husband Don of Teutopolis, IL; one nephew, Mark Long and his wife Lila of Grover, NC.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Gene had been employed with Schout Painting and Wallpapering of Charleston, IL. He also had been a mechanic for K.C. Summers in Mattoon, IL and Ledford Ford in Charleston, IL and had worked at Young Radiator in Mattoon, IL.

He was a member, elder, cemetery trustee, and church trustee of the Mt. Zion General Baptist Church in rural Cooks Mills.

Gene loved his family. He enjoyed eating out, especially at QQ Buffet. He was looking forward to camping and riding his scooter this summer. He loved to sit and listen to the Gunny Sack Review in Arthur on Wednesday evenings. He also loved taking care of Phillip’s dogs,Piglett and Steeler.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials were made to his wife Penny, or Mt Zion General Baptist Church.
