Genelle Voorhis

GENELLE W. VAN VOORHIS, 89, of Arcola, IL passed away at 1:57 A.M. on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home’s Harmony Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the Edwards Funeral Home, 221 East Main, Arcola, IL. Roger Ashmore will officiate. Burial will be in the Van Voorhis Cemetery in rural Hindsboro, IL. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home.

Genelle was born on June 3, 1919 in Douglas County, IL. She was a daughter of Samuel and Martha (Wierman) Wendel.

She is survived by one son John VanVoorhis and his wife Audrey of Strasburg, IL; four grandsons, Jay VanVoorhis and his wife Patty of Astoria, IL. John P. VanVoorhis and his wife April of Duquoin, IL, James VanVoorhis and his wife Julie of Delavan, WI and Joel VanVoorhis and his wife Kerry of Strasburg, IL; seven great-grandchildren, Caleb, Nick, Anna, Hannah, Sara, Isaac and Asa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters Rose Clay, Eva Starkey and Lois Robinson and two brothers, Reece and Lester Wendel.

Genelle had been a switchboard operator for Arcola for several years and later worked at USI as a switchboard operator and receptionist. She enjoyed reading, traveling and visiting with friends.

She was a member of the Hindsboro Christian Church.
