James Robert Eickberg, 86, of Arcola, IL, died at 8:14 A.M. on Sunday, August 4, 2013 in Arthur, IL.
Graveside services are to be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at Dodge Grove Cemetery in Mattoon, IL. Pastor Vince Rhon will officiate. Edwards Funeral Home of Arcola is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Jim was born on October 21, 1926 in Stewardson, IL. He was the son of Louis C. and Bertha L. (Grove) Eickberg. He married Erma A. Ford in March of 1948. She preceded him in death in 1974. He later married Dolores (Upton) Mackey on November 8, 1975.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores Eickberg of Arcola, IL, one son, Fritz Eickberg of Villa Park, IL, one daughter, Lynn Collins and her husband, Jon of Charleston, IL, one step-son, Michael Mackey of Tuscola, IL, two step-daughters, Christy Wirick and her husband, Butch of Tuscola, IL and Sharon Bickel and her husband, Dick of Arcola, IL; eighteen grandchildren, Preston Eickberg and his wife, Christin of Villa Park, IL, Abby Eickberg and her special friend, Jeff White of Mattoon, IL, Dana Jodeika and her husband, Richard of London, England, Andrea Todd and her husband Sean of Louisville, KY, Joshua Collins and his wife, Beth of Florissant, MO, Jeremy Collins of Charleston, IL, Joel Collins and his wife, Adrienne of St. Charles, MO, Robin Mackey of Peoria, IL, Caleb Mackey of Iowa, Kerry Mackey of Macomb, IL, Kim Turner and husband, Tim of Champaign, IL, Jamey Wirick and wife, Chrissy of Tuscola, IL, Ashley McNary and husband, Scott of Maineville, OH, Thomas Bickel and special friend, Candace Argo of Arcola, IL, Rachael Pullen and husband, Brad of Arcola, IL, Emily McCoy of Arkansas, and Parker and Chloe Ingram of Arcola, IL and twenty great-grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Erma and their infant daughter, Kristina.
Jim graduated from Mattoon High School in 1944 and attended the University of Illinois before entering the military service. He was a U.S. Army W.W. II veteran.
He worked in the family business, The Castle Inn Restaurant in Mattoon, IL from the time he was in seventh grade until it sold in 1974. He was also engaged in farming and oil production for most of his life. He was presently employed as a guard at MasterBrand in Arthur, IL.
Jim and Dolores traveled extensively around the United States, as well as outside of the country. They especially enjoyed a trip they took to South America. Jim liked puttering around outside and had to be busy all of the time. He was a very generous man. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up and was also quite the practical joker. He had a special place in his heart for their little dog, Sadie and two cats, Little Man and Trouble.
