John Smith

JOHN WESLEY SMITH, 55 of Garrett, IL passed away at 5:40 A.M. on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at the Southern Baptist Church, 530 N. Vine Street in Arthur, IL. Rev. Doug Davis officiated. Burial was in the Bement Cemetery. Visitation was from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, August 30, 2013 at the Southern Baptist Church, 530 N. Vine Street in Arthur, IL. The Edwards Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

John was born on July 27, 1958 in Monticello, IL. He was a son of James H. and Alma Rose (Root) Smith. He married Charlene S. Rardin Cowell on June 2, 1987 in Atwood, IL.

Survivors include his wife Charlene Smith of Garrett, IL; two step children, Larry Cowell and his fiancé Carrie of Tuscola, IL and Alicia Grant of Arthur, IL; one sister, Frances Montgomery of Arthur, IL and one brother, Kenny Dale Smith and his wife Edna of Tuscola, IL; one granddaughter Kylie Cowell of Indianapolis, IN and two grandsons Hunter and Coye Grant of Arthur, IL as well as several nieces nephews and cousins.

John was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Linda Icenogle and one brother Wayne Smith.

John served as a Board Member for Garrett, IL before becoming the Mayor this past year.

He was a member of the Arthur Southern Baptist Church.

John worked for Illini Drywall for the past twenty-six years.

He enjoyed spending time in his garage tinkering around and spending time with family and friends.
