Mark Carlus Weller was born in Houston, Texas on August 13, 1955, the third of three sons to Norman and Joy Ann (Rich) Weller. He died peacefully on December 1, 2022, in Austin, Texas in South Austin Medical Center, with family by his side. Mark is survived by his Mother, Joy, his brothers Perry and Dana, his foster sister, Susan McDonald, and many nieces and nephews.
Soon after Mark was born, Norman and Joy moved from Houston, back to Illinois in 1956, to be close to family. Mark grew up in the Hindsboro area, attended Kemp Church of Christ, Kemp Elementary and later, Arcola schools. In 1968, the family returned to Houston, where Mark graduated from Belaire High School, in 1973.
Mark loved the outdoors and spent as much time as possible hiking, camping and fishing in Texas, Colorado and the New Mexico area. Living in Houston during the building boom of the 1970’s and 1980’s, he began working in the construction industry and soon worked his way up from laborer to supervisor. He was adept at managing crews and scheduling material deliveries, and was greatly appreciated by management, receiving frequent bonuses. Mark’s style was to work alongside his crews, leading by example, not just giving orders. As a result, he was highly respected by his peers and everyone who knew him. Mark followed the ups and downs of the construction industry in the greater Houston area, Abilene and later in Austin, having major responsibility for numerous projects including high-rise apartment and office buildings.
Mark was always a frequent guest at our Mom and Dad’s home in Meyerland, spending time and helping them, as they approached their 90’s. In 2017, when they were flooded in Hurricane Harvey, Mark was the first to reach them after the streets became passable and brought them to Perry and Pam’s home in Austin. He then returned to Houston and applied his contracting skills to hire and manage remediation crews, racing against the clock to remove wet carpet, sheetrock, debris and dry the place out. Unfortunately, Mom and Dad would never be able to return to the Meyerland home that they loved. Our father, Norman Weller, passed away in Austin, June 30, 2018.
A common theme throughout Mark’s life was his compassion to others and selflessly serving wherever he could. He took Megan Tompkins under his wings of love and care when her mother, Pam, tragically passed away when she was a toddler. Mark remained a source of love and support for Megan for over thirty years – and was the most constant figure in her life. He was a loyal friend and helper to Megan’s great-grandmother and her grandmother, up to the end of their lives. Megan was with Mark, holding his hand when he went to be with Jesus.
“Uncle Mark”, (as he is affectionately known by his family), has played an important part in the family at holiday gatherings, birthdays and anniversaries. He always remembered his nieces and nephews at Christmas time with special gifts of silver coins. He was very thoughtful in selecting gifts for his parents. He found many buffalo gifts for his Dad, and birdhouses for his Mother. One of our favorite memories is when he brought live lobsters from Houston, and supervised cooking them on the gas grill. He persevered, even during a deluge of Mother’s Day rain. He had a special place that we always kept for him to sit, and he will always have a special place in our hearts.
We are thankful for Mark’s faith in Jesus Christ and look forward to spending eternity with him in Heaven. A celebration of Mark’s life will be announced at a later date. His remains will be laid to rest in Arcola, Illinois.
