Mary Hansen

MARY L. HANSEN, 99, of Arthur, IL passed away at 11:30 A.M. on Friday, September 5, 2008 at Palm Terrace Nursing Home in Mattoon, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, September 8, 2008 at the Edwards Funeral Home, 221 East Main, in Arcola, IL. Rev. Michael Johnson and Rev. Kenneth Roedder will officiate. Burial will be in the Arthur Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home.

Mary was born on August 24, 1909 in Murdock, IL. She was a daughter of Napoleon B. and Grace (Long) Brooks. She married Carl Henry Hansen on April 1, 1929 in Douglas County, IL. He passed away on April 1, 1988.

She is survived by one daughter, Betty Jane “BJ” Hale and her husband Gerald “Jerry” of Arthur, IL; two granddaughters, Carol Crist and her husband Dave of Arthur, IL and Cheryl Sweet and her husband Scott of Mattoon, IL; two great-grandchildren, Zeb Crist of Charleston, IL and Haley Crist of Arthur, IL, one half sister, Jean Payne of Indianapolis, IN and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and several brothers and sisters.

Mary had been a seamstress for Dawson’s Apparel and Dottie’s Fashions both of Arthur, IL. She volunteered at the Arthur Home for several years and was named volunteer of the year two times. When it came time for her to go to a nursing home she decided not to go to the Arthur Home because she wanted to be remembered as a volunteer, not as a resident.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Tuscola, IL. She attended the Vine Street Christian Church in Arthur, IL. She enjoyed dancing and fishing in her younger years, sewing, collecting antiques and going to rummage sales.
