MILDRED QUIVEY, 89, of Arcola, IL, passed away at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 26, 2011 at the Edwards Funeral Home in Arcola, IL. Burial will be in the Arcola Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home.
Mildred was born on March 8, 1922 in Denver, IL. She was a daughter of Ervin Tazewell, and Opal Pearl (Smith) Akers. She married Albert Quivey on June 10, 1944 in Thomasville, GA. He passed away on August 10, 2005.
Survivors include three children, Cindy Barr of Nashville, IL , Jeff Quivey and his wife Mary Ann of Steeleville, IL, Dr. Julie Quivey O.D. and her fiancé Herb Grindley of Mahomet, IL; four grandchildren, Scott Barr and his wife Barbie of Belleville, IL, Steve Barr and his wife Kimberly of Highland, IL, Weston Quivey and Elise Quivey both of Steeleville, IL, and two great grandchildren, Colton John Barr of Belleville, IL and John Barr of Highland, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Steven A. Quivey, three sisters, Marjorie Cramer, Jean Ramsey, and Dorothy Lummis, one brother, James Akers and a son-in-law, John Barr.
Mildred attended Western Illinois University and received her degree in elementary education, she received her Master’s degree from the University of Illinois.
Mildred was a member of The United Methodist Church of Paxton, IL, the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Paxton, IL, the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education at the University of Illinois, and the University of Illinois Alumni Association.
Mildred taught for 39 years in elementary education. She taught in Carthage and Hancock County from 1941 to1949, then in Paxton and Ford County from 1949 to 1983, and retired in 1983 from Clara Peterson School in Paxton, IL where she received the Evelyn Wylie Burton, Teacher Of The Year Award and in that same year she was also awarded the Outstanding Educator Of The Year Award from the News-gazette and the Regional Office Of Education for Champaign and Ford Counties. After retirement, she was a substitute teacher for Arcola from 1983 to 1999. She also worked at Rockome Gardens as a cook for several years.
Mildred was an avid Illini Basketball fan. She liked to work cross word puzzles, watch the Wheel of Fortune, bake and cook. Mildred was a great mother, she will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
