Roger Wayne Benting, 60, of Urbana, Illinois, formerly of Danville, Illinois, passed away at 8:30 PM on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL.
He was born November 14, 1964 at Lakeview Hospital in Danville, to Ben and Tena (Hayn) Benting. He grew up in Covington, Indiana and graduated from Covington High School in 1983.
He is survived by two daughters, Courtney Gibson and her husband Shay of Arcola, IL, and Hayley Benting and her partner Matt Ellis of Monticello, IL; his brother Mervin (Georgia) Benting and his sister Marilyn Bracken.
Roger adored his grandchildren: Hans Greyson Stacher, Emma Jo Gibson and Dale Harlan Gibson, and they also survive along with his many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents, one brother, Ronnie Benting, one sister, Beverly Padgett, and brothers-in-law Wayne Bracken and Lonny Padgett.
Roger was a multi-sport athlete in high school and a stand-out on the football field playing both offense and defense. With multiple 100-yard rushing games, usually including 15 or more tackles, Roger always found his name in the paper. He passionately rooted for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cardinals baseball, and Illini sports. He loved music and had a wide range of favorites from The Carpenters and Elton John to Guns-N-Roses and especially Billy Idol. He enjoyed being outside as much as possible either keeping his yard tidy, mushroom hunting or going on canoe daytrips. Above all else, he loved spending quality time with his family.
He worked as a car salesman for many years, eventually having his own operation in Champaign, Illinois.
There will be a celebration of life for Roger on Saturday, May 3, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Edwards Funeral Home, 221 East Main St., Arcola, Illinois.
