Terry Knaus

TERRY LEE KNAUS, 70 of North Port, FL formerly of Arcola, IL passed away at 6:30 A.M. on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the Englewood Hospice House in Port Charlotte, FL.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at the Edwards Funeral Home, 221 East Main, Arcola, IL.  Burial with Military Rites conducted by the Mattoon VFW will be in the Arcola Cemetery.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Terry was born on April 6, 1948 in Evergreen Park, IL.  He was a son of Dale Edward and Meriedith M. (Roberts) Knaus.  He married Doris Ann Young on October 8, 1971 in Neoga, IL.

He is survived by his wife, Doris, one brother, Paul D. Knaus of Mattoon, IL and one sister, Lynn Ann Knaus of St. Louis, MO.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Kay Knaus.

Terry was a 1966 graduate of Arcola High School.  He was on the basketball team for four years and was the only sophomore who dressed varsity on the 1964, “Sweet Sixteen” tournament basketball team.  He also ran track for 4 years and played football for 4 years.

Terry worked for Clapp and Ghere Construction right out of high school.   He was a Navy Veteran having served two and a half tours in Vietnam as a Seabee.   When he returned home from the Navy he worked for Dale Clark, doing construction work for about three years.

In 1973 Terry joined the Operating Engineers, Local 841 out of Terre Haute, IN and became a heavy equipment operator.   Terry has worked in 18 different states.  He has operated dozers, loaders, high hoes and spent thirty plus years operating a roto-mill.   He retired with over 40 years of service.

Terry was a life member of the Mattoon VFW #4325 and he was a member of the Arcola United Methodist Church.

He and his wife Doris enjoyed traveling around the world and meeting new friends.

Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital or to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
