Virgil Dale Sylvester

Virgil Dale Sylvester, 73 of Mattoon, IL passed away at 2:43 PM on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at his residence.

Graveside services will be held at a later date. The Edwards Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Virgil was born on July 7, 1951 in Tuscola, IL. He was the son of Howard Wesley and Helen Yarnell (Thomas) Sylvester. He married Janice Rae Harris on June 3, 1970 in Arcola, IL at the United Methodist Church with Re. Wesley Goff presiding. Janice passed away on September 21, 2023.

Virgil is survived by two sons, Toby Sylvester of Charleston, IL, and Troy Sylvester and his wife Christine of Tuscola, IL; six grandchildren, Tristan Brown of Champaign, IL, Josie Sylvester of Chicago, IL, Alexandria, Colton, and Jenessa Sylvester all of Charleston, IL and Mathew Morgan of Tuscola, IL; three great grandchildren, Wesley and Jaelynn Sylvester and Connor Morgan; his mother, Helen Sylvester of Arcola, IL; and two brothers, Mike Sylvester of Charleston, IL and Larry Sylvester and his wife Pam of Benton, IL.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Sylvester, and his wife, Janice Sylvester.

Virgil graduated from Arcola High School in 1969.

Virgil worked diligently as a beverage distributor for Pepsi. He also worked for Electro Battery, Coca-Cola, Chesty Potato Chip Delivery and Butternut until he retired. 

He had a variety of hobbies and interests. He loved playing video games with his family, collecting comic books, coins and stamps. Virgil was a master at playing Pacman and he was an avid reader.
