Walter Hood

Walter Leslie Hood, 88 of Decatur, IL passed away at 3:12 A.M. on Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at Fair Havens Christian Home in Decatur, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at Glad Tidings Assembly Of God, 655 Airport Road, Decatur, IL. Pastor B.G. Nevitt and Pastor Robert Hoover will be officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard will be in the North Fork Cemetery in Decatur, IL. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at Glad Tidings Assembly of God.

Les was born on July 10, 1919 in Moweaqua, IL. He was a son of Walter L. and Rowena (Calvert) Hood. He married Viola M. McGuire on November 30, 1941 St. Charles, MO. She passed away on December 25, 2003.

Survivors include four children; Sharon Taylor and her husband Brad of Argenta, Donald Hood and his wife Lynette, Pamela Johnson and her husband Stephen and Robert Hood and his wife Penny all of Decatur, IL; fourteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

His parents, his wife, Viola, one granddaughter, Hope Vieweg and two brothers, Harold and Bill Hood preceded him in death.

Les loved the Lord, he taught Sunday School alongside his wife for many years, first at Antioch Christian Church and then at Glad Tidings Assembly of God where he has been a member for several years. He was a member of a Life Builders Group as well as an usher and greeter at Glad Tidings.

Les was an Army Veteran of World War II having served in the Seventh Armored Division. After the war, he owned and operated Hood's Standard, a service station located along Rt. 36, for many years. He was later employed at Caterpillar in Decatur and retired in 1981 with 27 years of service. He was an assistant boy-scout master for Troup 43 in Mt. Zion. He also volunteered for Long Creek Fire Department.

Les enjoyed being around others. He never met a stranger. He also never forgot them.

He was a very creative man and would invent things to make tedious house hold chores easier. He enjoyed all things social from parties to playing cards with friends and his newest hobby of dancing with his special friend Ferne Bellatti.
